2019 FANTASY BASEBALL CRISIS POINT: GERRIT COLE SP HOUSTON ASTROS

Another day and another Crisis Point detailing yet another prime fantasy baseball starting pitcher who has hit the skids early on.  Today we bring you the case of Houston Astros ace Gerrit Cole who re-established himself into a top-tier power pitching monster in 2018 by recording 276 strikeouts while also posting a 2.88 ERA and winning 15 games.  Like most other pitchers all across the game however, that success has not carried over into 2019 as Cole goes into his next start with the following ugly numbers:

1-3
5.22 ERA
1.19 WHIP
2.76 BB/9
1/23 HR/9
.333 BABIP
2.81 FIP
2.66

When you look at the case of Cole, it draws a lot of similarities to one we did on the New York Mets' Noah Syndergaard a few days ago.  Both guys have suffered from some rough BABIP luck and in Cole's case, his adjusted FIP (2.81) and XFIP (2.66) are both terrific numbers that resemble what he accomplished last season.  In addition for Cole, his strikeouts remain tremendously potent as his current 13.50 K/9 is above the monstrous 12.40 he had in 2018.  About the only quibble we have with Cole is that he is giving up a high number of home runs this season which have skewed his overall results but the bottom line here is that when the luck begins to adjust, he should go right into his ace numbers once again.  It really is quite stark that Coles underlying metrics all point to him being as good as ever and so if anyone in your league is nervous based on the early results, do your best with regards to trying to snag him cheap.
