The 2018 NFL football season officially got underway in terms of game action on Thursday night in the Hall of Fame Game between the Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Ravens. Since both teams will be playing a ridiculous five preseason games, there was not much in the way of fantasy football-relevant items to discuss since the key players were mostly held out. One interesting player who did get into some action was Baltimore Ravens rookie first-round pick QB Lamar Jackson who just got done putting up video game numbers while winning a Heisman Trophy during his Louisville tenure. Blessed with a cannon for an arm and blazing speed, comparisons to Michael Vick seem spot on. However Jackson was also considered to be a work-in-progress and he showed why in struggling Thursday night when he completed 4-of-10 throws for 33 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Jackson was late on his throws and seem to struggle picking what the defense was trying to do. So while many will try to say Jackson has a chance to dethrone Joe Flacco in 2018, it will have to wait awhile and the former is really nothing but a waiver guy to begin the season in fantasy football.
-Speaking of young QB's, a major topic of discussion lately has been the 7 interceptions that Kansas City Chiefs second-year passer Patrick Mahomes has thrown during the team's practices. That certainly is a lot of picks but it is preseason and Mahomes surely has some growing pains to go through before realizing his own vast potential. The hype on Mahomes has been out of control however so far this summer and while I understand that based on the insane amount of weapons he has at his disposal, Andy Reid will likely lead on the run with Kareem Hunt and Spencer Ware early on in the season as his QB gets comfortable. That means the fantasy football numbers may not flow as freely as one would think right out of the gate and so paying such an expense on Mahomes looks like a bit of a reach. For me personally, I would rather have Philip Rivers, Jared Goff, Ben Roethlisberger. and Jimmy Garoppolo over Mahomes.
-New York Jets wideout Quincy Enuwa just can't seem to get through preseason without some sort of health woe. A year after suffering a season-ending neck injury during the preseason, we learned Thursday that Enunwa will miss 1-2 weeks of camp due to a thumb issue. While Enunwa had some intriguing fantasy football upside last summer, he has now been passed by Robby Anderson on the depth chart and so he is looking like nothing but bench/waiver fodder.
-It was a scary afternoon on Thursday for the owners of Pittsburgh Steelers wideout Antonio Brown who of course is the top dog at the position and a top-five pick in all of 2018 fantasy football given his 100-plus catch chops. Brown departed the team's workout Thursday for unknown reasons and even afterwards, the team still didn't update the media as to what was going on. ESPN's Adam Schefter did say Brown would be fine "in a few days" but still it was a bit disconcerting to see this. By the looks of it though, Brown should be just fine.
