2018 FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: SCOOTER GENNETT 2B CINCINNATI REDS

Entering into the 2017 fantasy baseball season, Cincinnati Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett was seen as a very good pure hitter who had finally tapped into some power the previous season when he smacked a modest 14 home runs.  That earned Gennett a label of being a better real-life than fantasy baseball second baseman and that led to him going undrafted in many leagues.  The rest as they say is history as Gennett then proceeded to go on an epic tear at the dish throughout the course of the 2017 season as he hit 20 home runs, drove in 97, scored 89, and batted .295 in what was one of the very best value play seasons of any position.  As terrific a year as Gennett had however, there were more than a few naysayers who thought his 2017 production belonged in the outlier bin and so he graduated only into middle round status for 2018 fantasy baseball drafts.  Once again fast forward to present day and Gennett has managed to do the seemingly impossible in even BETTERING his 2017 rates as he went into July 4th with the following numbers:

.332
14 HR
56 RBI
50 R
2 SB
19.4 K/9
6.2 BB/9
.381 BABIP

Looking at the numbers above, Gennett has been a power monster again at second base and his runs and RBI numbers are very good as well.  What also stands out though is the batting title average of .332 which when combined with the power, makes Gennett one of the most productive overall hitters in the game this season and incredibly valuable in fantasy baseball.  Clearly, Gennett's power is for real and we need to stop doubting his abilities there.  At the age of 28, it makes sense that Gennett's power went up the last season-plus given that he had just reached his prime and so we now have to stamp him as legit there.  About the only knocks really are the .381 BABIP which is not sustainable as Gennett has been more of a .315 guy there in his career.  So there will be a hit to the batting average soon enough but Gennett is still capable of putting up a .300 average which is still very good.  Overall, Gennett has been fantastic and looks well on his way to another tremendous campaign.
