2018 FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: TYLER SKAGGS SP LOS ANGELES ANGELS

When you are the 8th overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, expectations understandably are very high in terms of future ability/impact.  Such was/is the case when it comes to Los Angeles Angels 26-year-old lefty starter Tyler Skaggs who has met with some stark roadblocks along the way in his development but who so far in 2018 has been nothing short of excellent.  Before delving any further, let's take a look at Skaggs' numbers which are beginning to garner some serious All-Star consideration:

6-5
2.64 ERA
1.22 WHIP
9.78 K/9
2.64 BB/9
0.78 HR/9
.320 BABIP

Coming off a 4.55 ERA in 2017, there were very little expectations attached to Skaggs when it came to 2018 fantasy baseball as he went undrafted in many leagues but the talent that made him such a high draft pick in the first place is certainly beginning to reveal itself.  Keep in mind that an earlier Tommy John surgery was needed on Skaggs and the resulting few seasons were not pretty as he tried to re-harness his stuff.  That seems like a thing of the past though as Skaggs has been tremendous from the start of the season as shown by the sparkling 2.64 ERA and solid 1.22 WHIP.  Perhaps even more impressive is the 9.78 K/9 as Skaggs is getting tremendous movement on his stuff which generate a high amount of swings-and-misses.  Skaggs is also not beating himself either with walks (solid 2.64 BB/9) or home runs in his groundball-heavy approach (0.78 HR/9).  A .320 BABIP is in the lucky range but even Skaggs' 3.05 FIP and 3.36 XFIP ERA's are very good.  So all in all, Skaggs has been tremendous and he looks legitimate all the way around.  Just beware of some August fatigue given the fact Skaggs has not had a big workload earlier in his career.
