2018 FANTASY BASEBALL TREND OR MIRAGE: MARCO GONZALES SP SEATTLE MARINERS

When the St. Louis Cardinals of all organizations decide they no longer need your pitching services, that is not such a ringing endorsement for current Seattle Mariners starter Marco Gonzales.  Considering that the Cards are universally acclaimed to being of the best organizations in the game in terms of developing front-line arms for the major leagues, their decision to part ways with Gonzales midway through 2017 in moving him to Seattle was nothing but a red flag.  No one could blame the Cardinals for their decision though as Gonzalez had already failed multiple times at the major league level when the team gave him a chance to stick and his nasty 6.08 ERA in 40 major league frames in 2017 only bolstered his beyond shaky status.  Well all it takes is a chance to change the narrative and that is what the Mariners gave Gonzales entering into 2018 as they bestowed a rotation spot on him in hoping a fresh start would unlock what at one time seemed to be very intriguing talent.  Fast forward to present day and Gonzales just recorded his sixth win in 9 decision with the following overall numbers:

6-3
3.38 ERA
1.31 WHIP
7.97 K/9
2.30 BB/9
0.68 HR/9
.339 BABIP

Outside of a high WHIP, the numbers are quite impressive here as Gonzales' ERA is very helpful and he is not beating himself with either walks or home runs which are both coming in at excellent numbers.  While the K/9 is straddling the mediocre line, Gonzales' .339 BABIP is in unlucky territory for a pitcher as his FIP is just 3.22.  So in actuality Gonzales has pitched better than his ratios indicate which is telling and he is getting plenty of run support which is helping to pad his win totals as well.  So while the margin for error is a bit thin here given the lack of K's, Gonzales is on such a role that he needs to be started in most matchups outside of the big AL East bomb squads.
