2018 FANTASY BASEBALL CRISIS POINT: CODY BELLINGER

The sophomore jinx lives on.  While Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Rhys Hoskins has earned much of the scorn as a major second-year player bust this season, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Cody Bellinger is right there with his counterpart in terms of vastly underperforming this season for his fantasy baseball owners.  Things have gotten so bad for Bellinger that he will not be dropped to the seventh spot in the batting order for Tuesday night's game as his season-long slumps has led to the following numbers:

.225
8 HR
25 RBI
32 R
2 SB
9.2 BB/9
24.8 K/9
.270 BABIP

Looking at the numbers as a whole, what stands out the most is how Bellinger's power is way down on a per game basis after he swatted a monstrous 38 home runs as a rookie in 2017.  The fact that the power is down is not a complete shock as opposing pitchers are being much more careful facing Bellinger this season and they also have had a whole winter to go to town on identifying his weaknesses.  Still, the .225 average is brutal and Bellinger was not great there a year ago with his .267 mark.  What is also troubling that the strikeouts are getting worse as the season goes on as Bellinger's K/9 of 24.8 is up from the near-20 mark he was straddling early on this season.  Clearly, Bellinger is pressing and now swinging at everything to try and get his season back on track.  Add in just 2 steals and Bellinger has been a huge letdown no matter how you look at it.  A .270 BABIP is certainly squarely in unlucky territory which gives us hope a turnaround is on its way but Bellinger looks so messed up that we are not optimistic about this happening.  Once again, we need to tread carefully with second-year players as that adjustment period coming off a big rookie debut is always a major challenge.
