2018 FANTASY BASEBALL STOCK WATCH: DANIEL ROBERTSON 2B TAMPA BAY RAYS

Every year in fantasy baseball, I make it a point to say the teams who enter the year in a clear rebuilding mode and who likely will have some of the worst records in the game often are gold mines for hidden gems that can help put your team into an even stronger competitive position in your league.  For the 2018 season, those teams include the Miami Marlins, the Oakland A's, and Tampa Bay Rays who all are already having difficult years but who also have a batch of young talent on their rosters that are showing some intriguing ability a month into the season.  One such player has been Tampa Bay Rays infielder Daniel Robertson who qualifies all over the diamond which is attractive in all fantasy baseball leagues but who also goes into Monday's games with the following numbers:

.355
3 HR
14 R
8 RBI
1 SB

Looking at the numbers at face value, Robertson has been locked in by hitting line drives all over the field and putting forth that batting title-like average.  While that is certainly impressive, it is a bit empty as Robertson has just a 3/1 ratio in the power/speed categories through a month-plus which is not so hot.  Still, Robertson has a terrific approach at the dish as his BB/9 rate of 20.0 is incredible and his matching 20.0 K/9 is just as potent.  The problem here is that guys in fantasy baseball whose best trait is batting average like it appears to be with Robertson are prone to having their stocks rise and fall though BABIP luck and variances that come with that always volatile category.  Right away we can see Robertson is toting around an insane .442 BABIP which is in no way sustainable and so the average will be dropping before too long.  When that happens and given the lack of power/speed, Roberston would then become a borderline fantasy baseball stock whose best value would then center on just his versatility.  So the point is not to get too comfortable here as Robertson's season could turn ugly quick.
