If you were to put forth a list of some of the worst-performing hitters in all of fantasy baseball in the months of March-April, no doubt Cleveland Indians first baseman/DH Edwin Encarnacion would be featured in bold lettering. To say it was an epic struggle for Edwin during that span would be a major understatement as he went into May with a putrid .160 average with 6 home runs and 10 RBI in 112 plate appearances. With a strikeout rate that ballooned 29.5 and given the fact he was aging quickly at 35, it certainly gave off the impression that Encarnacion was done. The only caveat I mentioned (which I tweeted the other day) was that Encarnacion had 31 days in May to prove this wasn't true and the reason I mentioned May is because historically speaking, it has been by far his most productive month in his long MLB career. Encarnacion has had some epic power binges in the month of May and so if he struggled in the next 31 days, it was safe to bid him goodbye forever.
Fast forward to present day and already on May 2nd, Encarnacion has homered TWICE in the Indians' matinee versus the Texas Rangers. That already is showing that Encarnacion's bat is perking up and so if you own him like I do, now is the time to dust him off. Of course I had Encarnacion on the bench but I won't make that same mistake tomorrow as he looks ready for another big month. So for now, Encarnacion's demise will have to wait a bit longer to be written.
