On the short list of the most sought after sleepers/young players entering into 2018 fantasy baseball drafts was without debate Philadephia Phillies hulking outfielder Rhys Hoskins.  After Hoskins came up late in 2017 and put up a home run display that was beyond insane (18 home runs in just 212 at-bats), the fantasy baseball community began picturing a mammoth season centering around 40 long balls and a boatload of runs/RBI.  As a result, Hoskins found himself being drafted in the Round 3-5 range amid those expectations and often when young players make such a huge ADP jump without a full year in the majors under their belt, trouble ensues.  Well if you take the first month-plus of the 2018 season into account, Hoskins seems ready to buck that trend as he goes into Monday's action with the following statistics:

5 HR
23 RBI
19 R
3 SB

Looking at the numbers, a few things jump right off the page and there are some surprises as well.  First let's begin with the power and it is there where Hoskins has actually been a bit slow out of the gate by his standards with just 5 homers in 140 at-bats.  There is no need to worry here though as Hoskins is your classic slugger who will hit 5 in 7 games and go on an absolute tear that will almost certainly result in 30-40 bombs.  The counting stats in runs and RBI have been phenomenal though and that is directly tied into Hoskins' ridiculous 19.3 BB/9 rate.  Those walks are what really separates Hoskins from most other young sluggers who tend to strike out a bunch and post ugly averages to go with all those home runs.  Now Hoskins has indeed struck out a lot as shown by his 27.9 K/9 rate, he is offsetting a big average hit with all those walks.  Finally, we have received a nice bonus from Hoskins in the form of 3 stolen bases which no one predicted.  That is serving as a cherry on top of the numbers sundae and so Hoskins so far has been worth every penny of what anyone paid for him this past spring.  The best part also is that the best home run output is still on the way and so Hoskins is ready for that special season we all anticipated.
