2018 FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: ANDREW HEANEY SP LOS ANGELES ANGELS

Better late than never.  For some top pitching and hitting prospects in Major League Baseball, it can take more than a few years for a player to find their groove or comfort zone at the highest level no matter how potent the talent may be.  Whether it is struggling with adjusting to the nuances of the major league game or whether it was suffering serious injury, often these players become "old news" in the fantasy baseball community; with drastically sliding ADP's bearing this out.  It is at this point where we advise you all to take one last look at these post-hype sleepers because they often yield the very best value if they do wind up panning out.  We could very well be seeing this now with Los Angeles Angels pitcher Andrew Heaney who at one time was the 9th overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Miami Marlins.  Known for impeccable control and sneaky good strikeout stuff, it seemed only a matter of time before Heaney was dealing at the major league level.  Well since he first debuted back in 2014, it has been nothing but injury frustration for Heaney which includes a Tommy John procedure.  With that surgery now well in the rearview mirror, we could be getting a look at the real Andrew Heaney as he goes into his next start with the following numbers:

2-2
3.93 ERA
1.19 WHIP
10.22 K/9
.330 BABIP
2.88 FIP ERA
3.13 XFIP ERA

Wow those numbers are impressive as the 26-year-old is rocking a massive 10.22 K/9 and the control remain splendid at a 2.36 BB/9. When you combine that type of strikeout rate with such a tidy walk total, top-shelf overall pitching numbers can quickly be achieved and Heaney already looks like he may be getting close to reaching that point.  His critics will point out that his 3.93 ERA is a bit high but his .330 BABIP is quite unlucky and so Heaney's FIP (2.88) and XFIP (3.13) ERA's are tremendous and near-ace status.  First of all if Heaney is available on your league wire, pick him up fast.  If not, do yourself a favor and try to steal him away from his owner as this is a big breakout taking place.
