2018 FANTASY BASBEBALL TREND OR MIRAGE: MILES MIKOLAS SP ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

Friday night saw the continuation of what has been a spectacular debut season 29-year-old pitcher Miles Mikolas for the St. Louis Cardinals as the righty lowered his ERA to 2.70 as he tossed 7 innings of shutout ball while giving up 7 hits, no walks, and striking out 4.  Having just arrived back in the States after pitching for a few years in Korea in an attempt to rediscover his game, Mikolas has been a major find so far both for the Cardinals and his fantasy baseball owners.   Of course now the question has to be asked regarding whether or not this is a fluke or if Mikolas' performance has strong legs to it.  So let's dig in a bit more here and start by taking a look at the overall numbers:

4-0
2.70 ERA
0.98 WHIP
6.98 K/9
0.45 BB/9
1.13 HR/9
.262 BABIP

Now in looking at the numbers, the ERA and WHIP has been tremendous and Mikolas no doubt has helped himself by maintaining top-notch control as shown by his sparkling 0.45 BB/9.  Of course, Mikolas has benefited from a lucky .262 BABIP but even his adjusted FIP (3.47) and XFIP (3.05) still show a very good SP 3 fantasy baseball pitcher.  Further delving into the numbers, Mikolas has been a negative in the strikeout column as his 6.98 mark is below the average 7.50 span.  Still, there is a strong case to be made that Mikolas' K/9 is a fluke and is headed for a jump since his average fastball velocity is a terrific 95.3.  That is some serious heat and so Mikolas has every chance to jump up in strikeouts the more comfortable he gets facing MLB hitters.  Now there could be some Nathan Eovaldi there in terms of having a big fastball that doesn't generate whiffs but unlike his counterpart, Mikolas gets good movement on his stuff which separates the two.  So in essence, Mikolas could pitch even better going forward in terms of adding K's to the arsenal.

When you cut to the chase on this, I would suggest holding Mikolas if you are a current owner.  The guy has shown great poise and a decent array of weapons to keep hitters off balance nicely so far this season and more should be on the way based on how the numbers look.
