2018 FANTASY BASEBALL TREND OR MIRAGE: PATRICK CORBIN SP ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

If you were to bunch up all of the games started by pitchers so far this young fantasy baseball season, perhaps the most impressive by a decent margin would be the one engineered by the Arizona Diamondbacks' Patrick Corbin versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 4th.  Showing off some of the best sliders we have seen in awhile, Corbin racked up 12 strikeouts and gave up just one hit and a walk in 7.1 shutout innings.  Previous to that outing, Corbin punched out 8 Colorado Rockies and gave up just 2 runs in 5.2 innings in his first start of the season.  Leading the majors with his 20 whiffs, Corbin's 1.38 ERA and 0.77 WHIP already have him towards the front of the line in terms of the best value plays for 2018 fantasy baseball.  A value play Corbin absolutely is as he was drafted very late this past spring in most drafts and was serving as mostly an SP 4 or 5 on the rosters he was on.  Perhaps we all should have given Corbin some more attention this spring however as he was hinting at his current breakout during the second half of 2017.

When it came to last season, Corbin's very ugly 4.71 ERA/1.53 WHIP during the first half of the year had him persona non grata to those who even owned him.  Well Corbin got his act together in an impressive way from that point onward as he pitched to a 3.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and punched out 83 batters in 88.1 frames during the second half.  So given the big start, it appears as though Corbin is picking up where he left off from last season which adds validity to what he is doing now.

Now in terms of whether or not Corbin can keep this going, it is interesting to note that his slider usage is way up which is where he is generating most of his K's.  If Corbin continues to rely on that pitch, he should be able to remain a big strikeout guy.  It also should be said that Corbin's 2.33 FIP ERA is not that much off what he is doing now and this adds more validity to what he is doing on the mound this season.  So while we all know Corbin won't pitch to a sub-2.00 ERA all season, he is proving to be a major headache for opposing batters and thus we like where this is going to say the least.
