2018 FANTASY BASEBALL CRISIS POINT: ANDREW McCUTCHEN OUTFIELDER SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

Like pretty much everything else that has gone on around the 2018 San Francisco Giants, the star outfielder they brought in during the winter has been nothing short of abysmal during the first week-plus of the season.  With the Giants already ravaged by injuries to their pitching staff (looking at your Mark Melancon, Madison Bumgarner, and Jeff Samardzija), the batting lineup that was fortified over the winter via deals for McCutchen and third baseman Evan Longoria was being looked at to lead the team until they get their arms back in May.  Well, McCutchen has certainly fallen well short of that expectation as he goes into Friday's games with a collective 0.83 batting average, to go with zero home runs, RBI, and stolen base.  Just one paltry run scored is all that McCutchen has delivered to his fantasy baseball thus far and needless to say, patience is running out already.

Before we go any further, however, a few things need to be noted which perhaps to a point explain McCutchen's early struggles.  For one thing, any player that gets moved from one team to another has to go through an adjustment period, especially going into a new division as McCutchen did.  There are pitchers that McCutchen will be facing on a more abundant basis out in the NL West that perhaps he is not as familiar with as before and so that will take a bit of a learning curve to figure out.  In addition, McCutchen's worst-performing month historically by a large margin has been April and he almost every year turns things on when May arrives.  He is a classic slow starter in every sense and so what we are seeing now goes right along with his career norms.  So while it is beyond frustrating what we are seeing out of McCutchen right now, he is just a year removed from 28 home runs, 88 RBI, and a .279 average for the Pittsburgh Pirates and he remains in his prime years.  A rebound is almost certain and that goes especially for when May gets here.  Keep the faith on McCutchen or even try to steal him in a buy low if possible.  There are better times ahead.
