Three scoreless innings and four strikeouts were the line for New York Mets hard-throwing righty Zack Wheeler Wednesday versus the New York Yankees which continued a trend of him pitching well in all three out of his outings so far this spring. Coming into camp, Wheeler was presumed to be the sixth starter on the Mets behind Thor, Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, Jason Vargas, and Jacob DeGrom but things may be changing on that front. As excellent as Wheeler has been, Matz has been equally brutal as he was absolutely bombed in both his spring outings so far and continues to show a dip in velocity compared to early 2016. With Matz having endured an endless string of serious injuries already in his career, it is fair to wonder if his stuff has been adversely affected. It is now not out of the realm of possibility Matz will be sent to the minors when the season begins in order to find his stuff, while Wheeler grabs hold of the fifth spot. On results alone, the cal is a no-brainer as Wheeler has simply been the much better starter.
