After taking a one day hiatus for the Super Bowl, we are back with wall-to-wall fantasy baseball coverage. Today we delve into the fantasy baseball starting piching I will avoid in drafts this spring, with a strong lean against those who will make the early round grade.
Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, Corey Kluber, Chris Sale, Noah Syndegaard: It especially pains me to have Scherzer here as I owned him in the Experts League the last 3.5 years but I still won't budge on refusing to use early-round pick on pitchers. I didn't include Stephen Strasburg here because MAYBE (not likely) he can slip to Round 4 where I may be interested given his lengthy injury history. I also didn;t include Madison Bumgarner as I would be all over him in Round 4 if he made it that far.
Luis Severino: I am worried physically about Severino and not his stuff due to the fact he took a MAJOR jump in innings last season. This almost always leads to injury trouble and a jog back on performance.
Yu Darvish: While the strikeouts continue to flow, something is not right overall with Darvish who is still unsigned as of this writing and who took a beating in quite a few starts a year ago. Another one with a screaming medical report.
Justin Verlander: Yes Verlander has found a second wind on his career but he is still 35 and with a ton of mileage on his arm. No thank you.
Gerrit Cole: Had Cole last season and wasn't impressed. Much less intrigued now as well since he is moving from the NL to the AL.
Jake Arrieta: The price has come down quite a bit here which means I may consider Arrieta in a certain round but he too has had declining velocity/stuff and an increase in injuries the last few seasons. Not the combination you want.
Sonny Gray: Gray in Yankee Stadium for a full season? I don't think so.
Kevin Gausman: Yes I know he throws hard but I never understand why people continue to chase this annual underachiever.
Dylan Bundy: Another one who took a big innings jump last season and whohad a lucky BABIP to post good ratios.
