2018 FANTASY BASEBALL PLAYER ANALYZER: JEFF SAMARDZIJA SP SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

Sometimes a certain player in fantasy baseball will absolutely drive you nuts seemingly year-ot-year but at the same time, your soft spot for said pitcher/hitter makes you come back for more the following year.  I do have such an affliction when it comes to San Francsico Giants veteran pitcher Jeff Samardzija who has been an annual draft favorite of mine but who at the same time has been quite frustrating to own.  Last year was no different as there was some good (205 K, 8.88 K/9, splendid 1.39 BB/9) but also some bad (4.42 ERA, 1.30 HR/9);  Yes, Samardzija failed to come through completely as a sleeper after signing into a great pitching park in San Francisco but I will chase him again at the draft this March.

First the good.  Samardzija remains a power arm capable of picking up a high number of K's and whose fastball remains potent at an average of 94.6 a year ago.  200 strikeout pitchers don't grow on trees and so Samardzija on that skill alone has value.  In addition, Samardizja's 4.42 ERA needs to be thrown out the door as he his adjusted FIP (3.61) and XFIP (3.60) were much more telling about how solid a year he had.  The only major bugaboo here and it is a big one is Samardzija's penchant for giving up home runs.  A 1.30 mark is very high and ugly and that needs to be shrunk a bit in order for Samardzija to post the ratios he is worthy of.  Despite this, there is much more good than bad here and with a very nice draft price, I will be a buyer of Samardzija again this spring.
