2018 FANTASY BASEBALL CLOSING TIME: METS BULLPEN LOOKS TO BE ONE BIG HEADACHE FOR 2018

Spring training has not even opened yet and already we have our first dreaded closer committee taking shape and in New York with the Mets of all places.  Despite the fact the Mets have an All-Star closer in Jeurys Familia in their possession, new manager Mickey Callaway has said on more than one occasions since his hire that he will likely employ a committee to handle saves at least to begin 2018.  This could be read as a proactive move by Callaway to not fully commit to Familia who struggled in coming back from blood clot surgery last summer but at the same time, it will likely serve as a major headache for fantasy baseball purposes in terms of trying to nail down the closer.  Even before Callaway made this announcement, I wrote in the pages of our annual Fantasy Sports Boss Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide (purchase below) that A.J. Ramos needs to be considered just as much a closer candidate as Familia for spring training but the Mets are one-upping that by also including Anthony Swarzak and Jerry Blevins as per their new manager.  Ramos is intriguing as he was a successful closer for the Miami Marlins the last few seasons in showcasing high strikeout stuff but also an annoying habit of walking batters.  It is easy to see Ramos potentially being the guy but Familia is not going away either.  Throw in Callaway's matchup proclivities and even Blevins could get the last out if a lefty is coming up to bat.  All in all, this is going to be tough to nail down early on in terms of which guy to take in drafts.  For now, we consider Familia and Ramos almost on equal footing in terms of value but this also could change on a dime.  Welcome to the closer carousel which figures to never stop spinning around.
