2018 FANTASY BASEBALL HOT STOVE SIGNINGS: WELLINGTON CASTILLO JOINS REBUILDING WHITE SOX

With few catcher openings being available around the league this offseason, free agent backstop Wellington Castillo didn't waste any time locking up one of the few destinations with an opening.  Castillo signed a two-year deal (with an option for a third) on Friday with the Chicago White Sox as he represents one of the very first moves in what has been a slow winter of signings.trades around MLB.  Becoming a bit of a journeyman, the White Sox will now become the fifth team Castillo has played for but either way, he remains one of the most underrated players both in real and in fantasy baseball.  As I always preach on here, the best course of action in yearly fantasy baseball drafts is to avoid picking a catcher early and instead go with upside or a solid veteran who doesn't get the credit he deserves.  Castillo personifies the latter qualification as he has now averaged 16.5 home runs over the last four seasons and he comes off a career-best campaign in 2017 that saw him bat .282 with 20 long balls.  Turning just 31 in April, Castillo remains in a prime power park in Chicago with the White Sox and that should keep him squarely in the 15-20 home run range again.  Now the .282 average may be asking a lot since Castillo put forth a nasty 26.6 K/9 last season but .265 will work just fine at the offensively-challenged catcher position.  The best part is that Castillo will undoubtedly remain under-the-radar at the draft table and so 2018 will be another opportunity for your to steal away a very good player at a nice price.
