2017 FANTASY FOOTBALL SATURDAY WRAPUP

We are into some Saturday games now as both the NFL and fantasy football seasons get set to reach their nadir.  Let's check out some of the more noteworthy performances to come out of the Detroit-Chicago game and the late San Diego-Kansas City contest.

-Despite a hand that is far from 100 percent, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford continues to get his numbers every week.  While the Bears defense got to him a bit with some hard hits/sacks, Stafford hung in to complete 25-of-33 passes for 237 yards with 2 TD.  Not his best work of the season but that will do fine for the fantasy football playoffs. Next week things look even better as Stafford gets the leaky Cincinnati Bengals defense who have given up along with the rest of the team.

-Outside of maybe Antonio Brown, there has not been a hotter wideout in all of fantasy football over the last month that the San Diego Chargers' Keenan Allen.  Allen was showing why he was so highly sought-after in drafts prior to last season as a possibly extreme PPR weapon but of course, he missed virtually the entire year with a torn ACL.  Allen had been able to dodge the injuries for almost all of 2017 until he was seen leaving Saturday night's game late on a cart.  While Allen didn't seem to be in much distress, the night was pretty much a bust as he caught only 5 balls for 54 yards.  Yes those totals would be very good for most receivers but they did not meet the expectations for Allen and his fantasy football owners given what he has done the last month.

-Another Chargers receivers who had a quiet night and also got hurt late was tight end Hunter Henry who grabbed just 3 balls for 28 yards.  Henry took a big hit late and didn't return to for the last series by the Chargers but overall it was a very disappointing night for a guy who was really coming on of late.

-Philip Rivers had one of his patented games filled with turnovers that come once or twice a season and of course it came at the worst time given the fantasy football playoff weeks arriving.  As great as Rivers has been this season, he had nothing Saturday night as he completed just 20-of-36 throws for 227 yards with 1 TD and 3 INT.  The K.C. defense was shockingly stout throughout the game and so Rivers laid a big egg to put a major hurt on his fantasy football owners going into the Sunday slate.

-One Charger who had a tremendous day was running back Melvin Gordon who rushed for 78 yards and a score on 19 carries; while also catching 6 passes for another 91 yards.  It was a PPR dream for Gordon and he looks spry and full of burst for the first time in weeks.  Clearly, Gordon has gained some recent health given how great he looked last night and he stands an excellent chance of keeping it going next week versus the New York Jets.

-Tyreek Hill has really exceeded my modest expectations for him this season as he has managed to stay healthy despite such a lithe frame and the numbers have flowed for sure.  Last night Hill caught 5 passes for for 88 yards and a score that went for 64 yards in the first half.  A big play waiting to happen, Hill does carry a bit of boom-or-bust with him but not as drastic as the similarly-skilled DeSean Jackson.

-Man Kareem Hunt has risen from the ashes at the right time.  After going AWOL for all of November and some of October after the big start to this rookie season, the speedy Chiefs back went nuclear Saturday night to the tune of rushing for 155 yards and as core on 24 carries; while also adding 7 catches for 51 yards and another score.  It is performances like this that can lead a fantasy football team to easy victory and Hunt was truly magnificent.  He seems to have picked up a second burst which likely had to do with Andy Reid not giving him a high number of carries in November.  While this ticked off Hunt's fantasy football owners at the time, clearly we are seeing the results of the move right now in a very postiive way.
