2017 FANTASY FOOTBALL STATUS REPORT: CHRISTIAN McCAFFREY RB CAROLINA PANTHERS

Ever since the Carolina Pantehrs selected Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the fantasy football community began anticipating with much excitement just how the kid's multi-dimensional skills would translate to the pro game.  Clearly there was some serious optimism as McCaffrey was habitually being drafted in the second round in many fantasy football leagues this past summer despite never having played an NFL down.  Those who take part in PPR leagues were even more determined to make sure McCaffrey was a part of their rosters.  As much as we respected the ability of McCaffrey, we put the brakes a bit on being that aggressive here in drafts given the fact that Jonathan Stewart was still on the roster and Cam Newton had become far from a sure thing at QB.

Fast forward to through four weeks of the NFL season and overall McCaffrey has just been all right.  While those in PPR have done much better with the investment due to the fact McCaffrey has been heavily involved in the passing game with 22 catches for 206 yards, his running numbers have been very shaky.  In fact McCaffrey has been pretty putrid running the ball as he is averaging just 2.9 per carry on 31 rushes for 89 yards.  And when you combine both skills, McCaffrey has zero touchdowns on the year which really puts a hurt on those who own him in standard formats.  Stewart has remained the starting running back as expected and taken all of the goal-line opportunities as well.  So if you had to grade McCaffrey so far in terms of fantasy football, you would have to give him a D + in standard leagues and a C+ in PPR.  While saying McCaffrey is overrated is too strong a word to use, there is no denying the fact that he has been a letdown to this point.
