When Philadelphia Eagles scatback Darren Sproles went down with not only a torn ACL but a broken wrist Sunday versus the New York Giants, immediate attention turned to third-string back Wendell Smallwood in terms of becoming an overnight hot pickup for Week 4 in fantasy football. The second-year man out of West Virginia has flashed big-time ability going back to his rookie year but he was left to pick up scraps left over from Sproles and goal-line back LeGarrette Blount at the onset of the season. With Sproles now out of commission, the lion's share of touches suddenly has become available and Smallwood figures to be the main guy to pick up the slack which made him worthy of being the top pickup off waivers this morning. With Eagles OF Frank Reich confirming Smallwood is in line for a big jump in workload beginning this Sunday, those who especially take part in PPR formats might see a nice value play develop the rest of the season.
In terms of numbers so far this season, Smallwood is averaging a modest 4.2 per carry (79 yards on 19 rushes), while he also has caught 3 passes for another 11. Count on a big jump in receptions as Sproles was heavily used on that front and Smallwood also should get the majority of carries between the 20's. While Blount will continue to serve as the goal-line back which hurts Smallwood in standard formats, he should be able to get enough work to eek out RB 2 value there. In PPR formats the ceiling goes to high RB 2 status. So hopefully you got Smallwood on waivers this week as he is looking like a swell in-season add.
