2017 FANTASY FOOTBALL STATUS REPORT: BILAL POWELL RB NEW YORK JETS

By the time you read this, the New York Jets may have released veteran running back Matt Forte  The worst kept secret of NFL training camp is the fact the Jets have no use anymore for Forte amid reports they aare desperately trying to trade him and failing that, are prepared to release him outright.  That would be music to the ears of those who own Bilal Powell for 2017 fantasy football as it would place the upstart in the position to be a bellcow back for the Jets from Week 1 onward.  Having proven himself to be arguably the best backup runing back in the NFL the last two seasons, Powell excels both running with and receiving the football.  During that span, Powell has received sizable playing time in the second half of both campaigns and it was then where he began to show these skills:

2015:  313 rushing yards (4.5 per carry), 47 receptions 388 yards
2016:  722 rushing yards (5.5 per carry), 58 receptions 388 yards

With Forte showing himself to be on fumes, Powell is more than deserving of being the starting running back.  Since it seems a given this will happen, those who drafted Powell on the cheap could have a significant value play on their hands in PPR formats.  We saw only in PPR formats as the Jets are going to be lucky to win 3 games this season and with the offense completely bereft of receiving talent, don't count on many TD opportunities.  On the other hands, Powell should catch a ton of balls as the Jets play catch up and the dump-off game in the second half of games this season and 60 receptions seems a given.  Throw in the extra yardage there to go with whatever he does on the running end and Powell is a RB 2 in all fantasy football formats this season.  He truly has become a big weapon for the team and in the PPR formats, the upside is solid.
