2017 FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: AARON NOLA SP PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

The biggest enemy of potential is injury.  No matter how talented a given a pitcher or hitter may be, ill health will always win out in terms of the battle between positive results and disappointment.  This battle has been waged on the arm and body of Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola who has hinted at ace ability the last two years, only to continually be undermined by health woes.  It was yours truly who also went to bat for Nola in labeling him a strong fantasy baseball pitching sleeper both for 2016 and 2017; with the injuries causing quite a bit of criticism coming my way.  Through it all however, I said to trust in the natural strikeout and overall high-end ability of Nola and that if he ever were to find health for an extended period of time, the results would follow.

Fast forward to present day and Nola comes off a Monday outing where he dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates to the tune of 7 shutout innings with 4 hits given  up and 8 strikeouts.  That brought it to three straight big-time outings by Nola who has now struck out 25 batters in his last 21.1 innings with 3 total earned runs given up in that span.  For the season, Nola has a lowering 3.73 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 72 K's in 72.1 innings pitched.  His four-pitch arsenal is confounding hitters and Nola is also generating the high K totals that he has done since becoming a major league hurler (261 total K's in 261 innings pitched in three MLB seasons).  Digging into the advanced metrics, we also find swell numbers as Nola's 8.96 K/9 is impressive; as well as his 2.86 BB/9 and decent enough 1.00 HR/9.  Nola is checking all of the boxes and thus he is starting to really yield a profit for his patient fantasy baseball owners.  If anyone had cut him loose however, pick Nola up immediately.  The potential that made him such a big sleeper candidate of mine is really starting to bear out.  The good times are here and they are impressive.
