2017 FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: MARCELL OZUNA OUTFIELDER MIAMI MARLINS

For all the attention that Miami Marlins slugging outfielder Giancarlo Stanton gets on the literal strength of his power, one can make the case in 2017 fantasy baseball that the early round pick is not even having the best offensive season at the team's position.  That distinction could be bestowed on fellow outfielder Marcell Ozuna who just got done smacking two home runs on Sunday to bring his season total to 22 as we haven't even hit the All-Star Break yet.  In addition to the home runs, Ozuna is hitting .317 with 59 RBI and 48 runs scored at the age of 26.  It certainly looks like Ozuna is putting it all together and having that big offensive career-year that stamps him firmly onto the fantasy baseball map for good.  Of course we have seen hints of this type of production from Ozuna in the past, such as in 2014 and 2016 when he hit 23 home runs for the team.  However in between there was a disturbing 2015 campaign that saw Ozuna hit just 10 home runs in 494 at-bats, bat a woeful .259, and get himself demoted back to the minor league due to insubordination.  Unlike the perpetual problems of Yasiel Puig however, Ozuna found maturity and now his career is fully on track.

In digging into the numbers, we can see why Ozuna is doing so well.  Like we mentioned, he is now hitting his physical prime which alone helps with the power.  However Ozuna has made the crucial improvements both in walks and strikeouts that are the classic calling cards for a breakout.  Ozuna's current 8.9 BB/9 rate is much better then the 7.1 he had a year ago and his 21.9 K/9 rate is down from some earlier ugly numbers in career there such as the 26.8 mark he had in 2014.  Yes a .354 BABIP has helped push the average above where it probably should be but the power is absolutely legit and Ozuna is on pace to easily pass by the potent 30 home run mark.  Even a run at 40 is now not out of the question.

So in terms of fantasy baseball, Ozuna very much is in the OF 1 discussion for 2018 as he is doing what those who own Yoenis Cespedes expected the latter to do.  Add in Ozuna's durability and he a lot going for him with regards to the fantasy baseball community.  We are fully on board here and think Ozuna's 2017 is the beginning of a trend of big season out of the slugger.
