2017 FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: LUIS SEVERINO SP NEW YORK YANKEES

What a difference a year makes.  This premise certainly applies to 23-year-old New York Yankees fireballer Luis Severino who at this time last year was being demoted to the minors after a string of simply brutal outings in the team's rotation.  Things got so bad so Severino that the Yanks eventually decided to move him to the bullpen where he actually excelled and thus brought forth spring training discussions that he would be better served operating out of there.  The Yanks and GM Brian Cashman stuck to their guns on Severino as a rotation member though and needless to say, things couldn't have gone any better.  Going into his Friday start, Severino had compiled the following numbers that on the surface would qualify for ace status.

2.75 ERA
1.02 WHIP
10.04 K/9

So at the very least, Severino has quieted talk that his arsenal is not expansive enough to stay a starter and so it is full steam ahead in his development which is now on full acceleration mode given how great he has pitched.  The definition of a power arm, Severino is right there at the top of baseball in K/9 with his 10.04 mark and he has paired that with excellent control to the tune of a 2.15 BB/9.  The latter is a marked improvement from last season's 3.17 and so that alone has helped Severino take the next step.  Also, Severino has lowered his HR/9 from 2016's 1.39 to this year's 1.08.  This is especially crucial when your home park in Yankee Stadium.  Finally, Severino leads all of baseball in average fastball velocity; further cementing his status as a top strikeout artist.

When you put it all together, Severino has really taken the next step in his development and is engineering a terrific breakout season for his lucky fantasy baseball owners.  The only issue I would say is that Severino could tire during the summer as the innings pile up but overall he looks fully like the real deal.
