It took only one game but Mallex Smith already has made a resounding return to the fantasy baseball world Friday night when he was slotted right back into the leadoff spot for the Tampa Bay Rays and proceeded to not only hit a home run but also collect three stolen bases. Known for some massive speed that collects stolen bases in a hurry, Smith can also crack the odd home run. Batting leadoff alone carries significant fantasy baseball value and already we have seen 72 games of Smith in 2016 when he swiped 16 bags and picked up 3 home runs in 215 at-bats for the Atlanta Braves. Having been given a fresh start and great opportunity on the value-loving Rays, Smith will be a staple in the leadoff spot for the team moving forward as long as he can stay on the field physically. Now in terms of the numbers, Smith has some strikeout issues (22.3 K/9 in 2016) but he also draws a high amount of walks to put himself in position to score runs and steal bases. Smith should be picked up in all formats on the steals alone and some extra contributions in runs and homers is possible.
