Even the usually durable Cole Hamels can't escape the insane injury epidemic that has ravaged fantasy baseball rosters high and low just one month into the 2017 season. Hamels was scratched from his Tuesday start with what the team is calling "oblique tightness" but no matter how you classify it, this is never a good thing. It is very likely that Hamels will be placed on the 10-day DL given the nature of any oblique injury and so his fantasy baseball owners will be in a bit of a pickle without him for a stretch. What is interesting so far about Hamels this season is that while he pitching well in paper with a 3.03 ERA, his advanced numbers are ugly as his K/9 has dropped all the way to a pathetic 4.13 and without the generous .219 BABIP luck he has had, the ERA would rise to a gross 5.14 (FIP) and 5.18 (XFIP). In other words if you own Hamels, you should do yourself a favor and get out from under this when he does come back given the good chance of things blowing up. It appears that year after year of 200-plus innings have robbed Hamels of his former ace stuff. It is not likely to ever come back.
