2017 FANTASY BASEBALL ISSUES: NOT ONE BUT TWO ACES GO DOWN WEDNESDAY

Wow was it a rough day to be an ace pitcher.  Wednesday was a black mark day for the number 1 hurlers as both Texas Rangers ace Cole Hamels and Cleveland Indians top gun Corey Kluber were BOTH placed on the 10-day DL with a serious oblique and back injury respectively.  The Hamels injury is much more concerning as he will be out at LEAST 8 weeks with a serious right oblique strain and that adds another layer to what was a disturbing start to his fantasy baseball season.  Kluber meanwhile has been battling some back discomfort for the better part of a week and the Indians felt it prudent to give him a rest.

Taking these one at a time, we already delved in deep on Hamels yesterday so no real to rehash what we said.  While his 3.03 ERA was very good, Hamels' K/9 rate dipped terribly to a pathetic 4.13 and his insane .219 masked what were actual adjusted ERA's that went over 5.00.  Now 33 and with a ton of mileage on his arm, one has to wonder if Hamels can even be considered a number 2 anymore,  Throw in the injury and his outlook is even more dire as we won't see Hamels again until after the All-Star Break.  While I think you still have to stash Hamels away, we could be looking at his cliff season.

Meanwhile Kluber has had his own difficulties this season as his ERA is horrid at 5.06.  Still Kluber's worth month historically is April and by a sizable margin and so we are less concerned about him going forward.  While his swinging strike rate has dropped sharply, Kluber is still collecting strikeout at an impressive 9.88 clip.  Unfortunately Kluber is giving up a lot of home runs (1.69 HR/9) and his velocity is still a bit below par.  Blame the long seasons he has pitched the last two years as well when it comes to the poor start.  Overall though Kluber should be fine as he is still young at 31 and gets better as the season goes along.
