Prior to the 2017 fantasy baseball season, prospective San Diego Padres closer Brandon Maurer had disaster written all over him. Having pitched to a terrible 4.52 ERA, Maurer seems like trouble waiting to happen as I suggested you avoid him in all fantasy baseball drafts. While it took a few extra weeks than anticipated, Maurer has crashed and burned as expected as he gave up two more earned runs Wednesday to raise his ERA to 6.75. At this rate, Maurer will be back in the minors before you know it and there is almost no way the Padres can keep going back to him in the ninth. Enter setup man Brad Hand who has been money all year to the tune of a 1.88 ERA and a closer-worthy 11.63 K/9. 2017 marks the second year in a row Hand has posted a K/9 over 11.00 which is hallowed ground and so he should go right to the front of the line in terms of taking over the ninth inning. Of course Carter Capps is getting closer to returning from the DL but he has to prove himself again after missing all of 2016 recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery. Hand needs to be added in all leagues right now given the strong possibility he will be promoted to the ninth inning and he has the chance to keep the gig outright even when Capps returns.
