2017 FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: TYLER GLASNOW SP PITTSBURGH PIRATES

The Pittsburgh Pirates finalized the back end of their rotation on Friday when they announced that hard-throwing but unrefined prospect Tyler Glasnow claimed the fifth spot in the order despite a rough spring.  The epitome of a talented but erratic power arm, Glasnow pitched to an ugly 5.65 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in just 14.1 innings in the exhibition season.  6 walks in those 14.1 innings show that Glasnow continues to struggle mightily with his control and that has been an issue from the start since he was originally drafted in the fifth round back in 2011.  On the bright side, Glasnow is a power arm personified and he can pile up the K's in a hurry.  We saw that when Glasnow struck out 23 batters in his 14.1 spring innings which is an absolutely tremendous rate and show how high the ceiling may go if he can get his pitches under control.

Glasnow first made his way into the majors last July but he quickly came down with a sore shoulder that required a DL stint and he was put in the bullpen when he returned in September which prevented some crucial development.  A 4.24 ERA was not horrendous given the fact he never pitched in the majors before but the storyline remained the same no matter what level he pitched at.  Glasnow can really be a monster on the mound when all is in fine working order as his 10.82 K/9 rate shows at Triple-A a year ago and he is capable of being above 9.0 as a major leaguer this season.  Again though the walks are a big problem and his WHIP is going to be nasty.  Throw in some perpetually poor health and Glasnow is nothing more than a risky SP 5 at this point in his development.
