2017 FANTASY BASEBALL CRISIS POINT: TREVOR STORY

There is a bad start to the season and then there is the slop being put forth so far from Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story.  Everyone's darling last spring training when he began slamming home runs left and right, which then carried over into the season, Story seemed like the next big star at the position and in fantasy baseball.  While a broken hand ended the fun early in August, Story still finished with a monster 27 home runs in just 372 at-bats.  Add in another month-plus of games that he wound up missing and Story could have been a 35-home run guy at a very shallow position.  As great as the surface numbers appeared, I myself spoke of trouble lying underneath.  For one thing, Story's .343 BABIP was tremendously lucky and would face a tough task being repeated for 2017.  In addition, Story's 31.3 K/9 rate was simply brutal and that combined with the luck regression meant a steep drop from his 2016 .272 was inevitable.

Fast forward to present day and Story has been arguably one of the biggest busts so far for 2017 fantasy baseball.  With a whole winter to dissect his weaknesses, opposing pitchers are going to town on the holes in Story's swing and through 53 at-bats, he is sitting with a .114 batting average.  No that is not a misprint as Story's 37.7 K/9 rate is ludicrous and he has just one home run to his name.  Now of course Story is too talented to continue struggling like this but this is why I avoided Story in all drafts and had him down as a BUST candidate for 2017 fantasy baseball.  The holes are big in Story's swing and now he is not being given as much to drive as he did as a rookie.  It could be tough sledding for awhile for Story but again this is no shock in terms of my projection.
