2017 FANTASY BASEBALL CRISIS POINT: MIGUEL CABRERA 1B DETROIT TIGERS

It is never too early to get in on our first "Crisis Point" of the season where we check in on a struggling prime fantasy baseball hitter/pitcher and discuss what is going on and where they could go from here.  Today we start with Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera who while aging, comes off a tremendous 2016 campaign where he batted .316 with 38 home runs and 108 RBI.  Turning 34 in April though and with a body that tends historically to decline earlier then those who are more "fit", many in the fantasy baseball community were leery of Cabrera in 2017 drafts.  Throw in the fact Cabrera hobbled around spring training with back pain that lingered into his tenure in the WBC and there was some cause for concern as the 2017 season got underway.

Fast forward to Monday and Cabrera needless to say has been abysmal through the first week of the season.  Right now Cabrera is just 2-for-17 on the year with no extra-base hits and a staggering 8 strikeouts.  The strikeouts are a big red flag for someone like Cabrera who has made a career out of being a low-K slugger who can hit .300-plus in his sleeper with big power.  While nothing has been said so far about Cabrera's back. one can easily see he is not right based on those hitting numbers,  Again we come back to saying that big-bodied guys like Cabrera tend to decline early and one only has to look at Ryan Howard and Price Fielder as two examples.  We are not saying Cabrera is headed down this road but the signs are ominous.  Right now if you are a Cabrera owner, you are almost obligated to play him through the struggles and overall I think he will be all right.  However let this be a reminder that no one escapes age.
