2017 FANTASY BASEBALL BRIEF: DEVIN MESORACO (HIP) TAKING BP, GETTING CLOSE TO GAME ACTION

The two-year losing battle to injuries that Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco has waged against injury that made him a forgotten man in fantasy baseball circles but 2017 brings yet another chance at a fresh start and the possible comeback to his once productive player at a thin position.  Coming back from previous hip surgery and complications, Mesoraco has been cleared to take batting practice with the aim for getting into games by mid-March.  The Reds are proceeding slowly with Mesoraco in order to avoid the setbacks he suffered in 2016 coming off the hip surgery and so far, so good on that front.  Again Mesoraco seemed like a future star in 2014 when he hit 25 home runs in just 384 at-bats but he has done literally almost nothing since.  Again there is potential here given the power and prospect pedigree and those in two-catcher formats should take a very late round stab.  Those in single catcher leagues though can avoid drafting Mesoraco and instead monitor his progress early on.
