Agent Scott Boras made a surprise announcement Wednesday when he reported that free agent catcher Matt Wieters suffered a lacerated arm this past November and blamed the issue on why he has not been signed yet. Wieters of course has been no stranger to health woes the last few years as he had a Tommy John surgery and as slow recovery since that has hurt his previously impressive offensive numbers for a catcher. While teams are still circling Wieters (the Nationals and Rays being the most ardent prospective suitors), he is still unsigned as spring training gets set to get underway. While Wieters was almost useless the first half of last season, he rallied to finish strong and post an impressive 17 home runs in just 423 at-bats for the Baltimore Orioles in 2016. The power remains very good and above-average for a fantasy baseball catcher and another starting opportunity would make him once again a very attractive and affordable catcher. I myself have always been a big proponent of Wieters since his draft price came down beginning in 2013 and will once again be interested if he again finds a starting spot.
