2017 FANTASY BASEBALL ISSUES: DALLAS KEUCHEL ON THE COMEBACK TRAIL
One of the biggest fantasy baseball busts of the 2016 season undoubtedly was Houston Astros ace Dallas Keuchel. This was one case that yours truly nailed perfectly as Keuchel led my All-Bust Team in last year's draft guide and so we weren't shocked when the lefty went out there and posted a horrific 4.55 ERA in 26 starts. Keuchel was no bad at times that he was released in many leagues. So in one year's time Keuchel went from 2015 Cy Young winner to 2016 trainwreck. As the baseball calendar turns to 2017 however, Keuchel is speaking in very optimistic terms of a big comeback and that he ultimately was derailed last season by what he labeled "major inflammation" in his pitching shoulder. We have spoken on too many times to count how debilitating a shoulder injury is to a pitcher and most stark is a lack of finish on pitches for those who sustain such an ailment. Thus it was not shocking to see Keuchel's K/9 rate go from 2015's 8.38 all the way down to last year's 7.71. With full health, it stands to reason Keuchel could be in line to post a decent comeback and at the same time value season in fantasy baseball terms. While I am still leery of the extreme outlier campaign Keuchel had in 2015, any player is of interest to me at the right price. In Keuchel's case, his ADP has slid so much that a year later he could be classified as a value play. I would only be interested here if Keuchel was my fourth drafted starter but would take a pass if the price is higher.
