2017 FANTASY BASEBALL DRAFT SLEEPER: JOE MUSGROVE SP HOUSTON ASTROS

When looking for young pitchers that can make the sleeper grade, a great place to start looking is in the control columns.  A pitcher's BB/9 rate is always a terrific indicator in terms of future ability to post solid ratios at the Major League level and it is also something that is tough to find as most young hurlers struggle with control.  One such arm that hast he control down pat is 24-year-old Houston Astro Joe Musgrove who is expected to be a firm member of the team's rotation for 2017.  The 46th pick overall in the 2011 draft did some nice things in his 2016 debut with the team as he pitched to a 4.06 ERA and 1.21 WHIP while striking out 55 batters in 62 innings.  While not out of this world numbers, Musgrove has been lauded for his terrific control while coming up the minor league ladder and his fastball/slider combination has done more than enough to confuse hitters at all levels.  And while Musgrove is not a big strikeout guy, he can dial the fastball into the low 90's with movement which gets enough punchouts to make him decent there.  While Musgrove carries more intrigue in Al-only formats, he could squeeze in as a good enough SP 5 candidate this season.

2017 PROJECTION:  3.88 ERA 1.22 WHIP 154 K
