2017 FANTASY BASEBALL DRAFT BUST: RYON HEALY 2B OAKLAND A'S

We all love power and will seek it out in fantasy baseball no matter where it might be located.  While the third base position in fantasy baseball has seen a ridiculous explosion of top end talent the last couple of years, a new addition to the mid-tier ranks was Oakland A's prospect Ryon Healy last season.  It was Healy who came up and proceeded to slam 13 home runs in just 269 at-bats for the A's; a continuation of the 14 additional taters he cracked in the minors before his promotion.  With a grip-it-and-rip-it approach, Healy became an overnight pickup for those in need of power the second half of last season.  Still just 25 years of age, Healy is now slated to be the A's everyday third baseman for 2017, there are those (especially in AL-only leagues) that believe the slugger is set for another year of tape-measure home runs and a high number of RBI.  Instead I will suggest putting firm brakes on such thinking as Healy stands a very good chance to fading right back into oblivion in 2017 bases on a number of factors to be discussed.

The first issue that needs to be addressed by Healy is his flawed approach.  He swings for the fences almost every time up and while that should lead to a decent amount of home runs for the guy, it also will come with a nasty batting average.  But didn't Healy bat a very good .305 last season?  Yes he did but he got there with a truly ridiculously lucky .352 BABIP which has no chance of being repeated.  With Healy's luck neutralizing this season, look for his average to dip into shaky territory such as a .260 mark or maybe worse.  Also keep in mind Healy doesn't draw a high amount of walks (6.2 BB/9 at Triple-A and 4.2 with the A's) which will further lead to average struggles.  Remember that Healy was never mentioned previously as a high-end prospect for the A's and he no doubt caught many opposing pitchers off guard the first time around last season.  While in AL-only formats you can take more of a liberal view of Healy, in mixers you should only draft him as a backup third baseman or backup UTL/CI bat at best.

2017 PROJECTION:  .262 18 HR 73 RBI 76 R 1 SB
