2017 FANTASY BASEBALL BRIEF: FIFTH STARTER SPOT UP FOR GRABS ON METS

New York Mets manager Terry Collins reported Monday that there will be a three-man battle at hand for the team's fifth starter's spot between Seth Lugo, Robert Gsellman, and Zach Wheeler.  Wheeler of course is coming back from missing all of 2015 and 2016 due to setbacks from Tommy John elbow surgery, while Gsellman and Lugo both were unanticipated revelations for the Mets in pitching big games down the stretch of last year.  Gsellman logged an excellent 2.42 ERA and solid 8.46 WHIP, while Lugo went 2.67 and 6.33 respectively.  Meanwhile Wheeler is considered to be part of the Mets' "Big Five" as a former top power pitching prospect but he may well end up in the bullpen early on to conserve innings.  With Lugo having a very mediocre K/9 rate, Gsellman could be considered the favorite here and worth a look in NL-only formats in terms of the draft.  If Wheelers wins the derby, he would have relevancy in mixed leagues considering his strikeout stuff.
