The Seattle Mariners made it a point to improve their starting rotation this winter but they made a curious decision on Friday when the traded with the Baltimore Orioles for struggling veteran Yovani Gallardo, In return the O's get outfielder Seth Smith who will likely play only against lefties but the main piece in the deal is Gallardo. Still just 31, Gallardo comes off what can only be described as a complete disaster of a 2016 campaign as he pitched to a 5.42 ERA in 23 starts for the O's. While Gallardo at one time early in his career was a 200-K pitcher who was knocking on ace status, his loss of velocity which began to get noticed back in 2013 has now made him a soft-tossing hurler with little margin for error. With a K/9 rate that is now simply brutal at 6.48, a laughable 4.65 BB/9, and a very high 1.22 HR/.9 rate last season, there is nothing worth talking about with regards to whether or not Gallardo can help you this season in fantasy baseball. Ignore him completely.
