Boy do the Houston Astros have an insane farm
system. Just a year after they unveiled
monster shortstop prospect Carlos Correa, the Astros brought up the number 2
pick of the 2015 draft in third baseman Alex Bregman last summer. Considered just as much of a can’t-miss as Correa,
Bregman sailed through the Houston farm system with little resistance. After smacking 14 home runs in only 62 games
while in Double-A, Bregman next went to town at Triple-A where he batted a
scorching .333 and hit another 6 home runs in 83 at-bats. Thus it was impossible for the Astros to keep
Bregman down any longer and his promotion was a “run to the waiver wire”
moment. While Bregman didn’t exactly
light things up with the Astros (.264/8-HR/2-SB in 47 games), there is no argument
to be made that he is as bright a prospect as there is in all of baseball. A hamstring injury that Bregman suffered
toward the end of the year was the only negative to really speak of and so he
should be on the short list as one of the most sought after fantasy baseball
sleepers for 2017 drafts. We are talking
about a future 30-home run masher who also can run a little and bat around
.300. That is outfielder 1 territory and
it is a status that Bregman will reach before too long. Do what you can to get a piece of this.
