FANTASY BASEBALL HOT STOVE REPORT: YANKS/BRAVES TALKS FOR BRIAN McCANN ARE "DEAD"

By Michael Wong

-According to a team source connected to the Atlanta Braves front office, talks between the team and the New York Yankees regarding catcher Brian McCann are "completely dead" and have been for a few weeks.  That lends credence to the reports that the Braves are in talks with free agent backstops Matt Wieters and more prominently Jason Castro as a solution to what has been an ongoing problem there.  Instead it has been the Houston Astros who remain in the lead for McCann but nothing is even close to being imminent.

-The Los Angeles Dodgers once again are in the middle of everything and their latest possible get is Detroit Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler.  The Tigers are listening on everyone including Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander, with Kinsler joining outfielder J.D. Martinez being the most recent names to emerge in trade rumors.  The Dodgers going after Kinsler would be a good move for them since they have only the fading Chase Utley lined up there at the moment and he is signed only through 2017 before a possible option a year later.

-As far as the closer market is concerned, Kenley Jansen and Aroldis Chapman continue to be courted most heavily by the New York Yankees, Dodgers, Nationals, and Giants.  Mark Melancon remains the fallback once those two are off the board.

-Carlos Beltran has a more robust market then expected for a guy who really is just a DH.  As I reported a week ago, the Yankees are more than mildly interested in a reunion with Beltran, while the borderline Hall of Famer is being targeted by the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, and Boston Red Sox.  Again Mark Trumbo and Edwin Encarnacion have to sign before this market should start getting some clarity.
