FANTASY BASEBALL GM MEETINGS REPORT: YANKS DETERMINED TO BRING IN TOP CLOSER, RED SOX CHOOSING BETWEEN BELTRAN/ENCARNACION

By Michael Wong

Scottsdale, Ariz.--The GM Meetings are underway and already the rumors and reports are flying around.

-New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman confirmed to reporters that he already is talking with the agent for top closer Aroldis Chapman in terms of a possible reunion.  Cashman of course dealt Chapman to the Chicago Cubs last summer but both sides are interested in reuniting for 2017.  The Yanks also plan on talking with the agents for Mark Melancon (a former Yankee draft pick) and Kenley Jansen as well.

-The Boston Red Sox have already been connected to free agent 1B Edwin Encarnacion but Carlos Beltran is also a primary candidate for their DH spot.  With David Ortiz retired, the top priority for the Red Sox is to fill the vacant DH spot and Encarnacion and Beltran are the best candidates to do so.

-J.D. Martinez is very much available for trade according to multiple sources.

-If The New York Mets can't bring back Yoenis Cespedes, Jose Bautista is their top fallback option.  Speaking of the Mets, GM Sandy Alderson said they won't entertain trades for any of their young pitchers and will also look to bolster the bullpen.  The latter has taken on more urgency with the recent domestic violence bust for closer Jeurys Familia.  On that front, the team wants to bring back Fernando Salas and Jerry Belvins, while also looking in on other options.

-Bartolo Colon is looking for a two-year deal but Alderson stated he was not a high free agent priority at the moment.

-The Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants are also going to be involved with most of the top free agent hitting talent, with the latter especially into Cespedes.
