FANTASY BASEBALL GM MEETINGS REPORT: GIANTS TALKING CONTRACT WITH CHAPMAN

By Michael Wong

Scottsdale, Ariz.--The San Francisco Giants have opened up contract talks with free agent closer Aroldis Chapman on Wednesday and they will engage with thre reps for Kenley Jansen before the meetings break up according to a team source.  The Giants are hellbent on fixing the awful closer situation that helped sink their 2016 chances and it appears Chapman is their first choice followed by Jansen.  The Yankees also touched base again with Chapman Wednesday, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers who are doing their due dilligence if Jansen bolts.

-Carlos Beltran is drawing a ton of attention as a prospective DH for up to a dozen teams, with the Al East all being involved outside of the Rays.

-The catching market is so thin that Jason Castro's name has come up a bunch in trade talks.

-The Houston Astros made waves here today when they said they were targeting Edwin Encarnacion in free agency and will try and make a deal for a bit Detroit Tigers bat among J.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera.  With Cabrera being owed over $200 million on his deal, don't count on anything getting done with him but Martinez looks like he could be a goner.

-Encarnacion wants to get to the full free market but the Blue Jays continue to pressure him to sign before then.

-Once Encarnacion finds a home, the dominos will then fall among Mark Trumbo, Kendrys Morales, and Beltran.

-The New York Mets made contact with rehabbing former closer Greg Holland, as have the Boston Red Sox who are quite interested.

-Mark Feinsand of the daily news says that the Yanks are actively engaged in talks with a team for Brian McCann.  It makes sense as the Yanks want to add flexibility to their DH spot since Gary Sanchez is now the starting catcher.  Rumors are that the Astros or the Braves are the team in his pursuit.
