FANTASY FOOTBALL GETTING TO KNOW: DWAYNE WASHINGTON

With the running back position setting a record for injuries and chaos leading into fantasy football Week 3, now would be a good time to delve in on one of the replacements of Detroit Lions starting back Ameer Abdullah starting in Sunday's games.  Abdullah is out for 8 weeks with a foot injury and he will be replaced by a two-man committee featuring receiving back Theo Riddick and bruising but quick seventh-round rookie Dwayne Washington.  While it is expected that Riddick will start Sunday, Washington is also expected to get between 10-12 carries and anything along the goal-line.  As tremendous a receiver as Riddick is, he is not a good between-the-tackles runner which Washington is more adept at.  What is interesting about Washington is his freakish combination of size and speed.  The kid stands a compact 6-1 and 223 pounds which will make him a big asset near the goal-line and thus in standard leagues.  Also Washington is no plodder as he put up a 4.40 40-yard dash time at the combine.  Thus it stands to reason that this could easily turn into a situation where Washington becomes the primary ball carriers and Riddick goes back to his strictly receiving game.  While Washington may not make a huge impact in Week 3, this is a project worth taking on given the future upside.
