FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: AARON SANCHEZ SP TORONTO BLUE JAYS

Despite the fact the Toronto Blue Jays would love nothing better than to curb the innings for top young starting pitcher Aaron Sanchez but in the heat of a pennant race, they are finding it impossible not to keep going back to arguably their most effective arm in 2016.  Summoning Sanchez to make a start Wednesday against a tough Baltimore Orioles lineup, once again the kid responded by giving up just an unearned run in six innings as he walked three, gave up just five hits, and struck out 2.  The outing lowered Sanchez' season numbers to a sparkling 13-2 record, a 2.88 ERA, and a 1.16 WHIP.  Tremendous numbers no matter the format and especially impressive when you consider Sanchez was a bullpen arm for most of 2015 amid questions of whether or not he could be a good starter.  Those questions have obviously been answered this season amid the scare of the innings piling up.  What is especially surprising about Sanchez is that he has pitched so well in arguably the toughest division in the game and also quite possible the most offensively-leaning home ballpark.  As they say though, the numbers don't lie.

Digging into those numbers, you would think the fact Sanchez has a mediocre 7.43 K/9 rate would make him more likely to have a higher ERA and get hit more often but no sir.  Sanchez has prevented that with a splendid 0.61 HR/9 rate which is especially important in the AL East and because of his solid 2.72 BB/9.  Combined together and Sanchez is not beating himself.  Hence his solid SP 3 placement.  What we do have to worry about though are the high amount of innings he is throwing this season leading to injury or elevated ratio trouble for 2017.  We have seen countless cases of this over the years, especially in the New York Mets rotation where high inning totals in 2015 have really hurt Matt Harvey, Jacob DeGrom, Steven Matz, and Noah Syndegaard.  While this is not guaranteed to happen next season, it is something to be aware of when weighing a Sanchez investment.  For now though, it all is coming up smelling like roses.
