FANTASY BASEBALL ISSUES: JACOB DeGROM INJURY REMINDER WE MAY HAVE TO AVOID YOUNG PITCHING GOING FORWARD

Gerrit Cole, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndegaard, Sonny Gray, Steven Matz, Danny Salazar, Zach Wheeler, Andrew Heaney, and now Jacob DeGrom.  There are others but the point is made.  Young pitching is now more injury prone then ever before and for all the reasons we have spoken ad nauseum.  Any sizable jump in innings before the age of 28 is almost always going to result in depressed numbers or injury the following season and that has happened in almost every one of these cases.  Gray not so much but he has thrown a ton of innings at a young age and now looks like he will be the next Matt Cain in terms of fading around the age of 30 due to Verducci Rules violations.  Things are so bad that as much as we love to go for young pitchers due to the upside and freshness of their names, investing here is becoming more and more of a problem.  Veteran arms like Max Scherzer, Cole Hamels, and others in this class are looking like the way to go for 2017 as there is much less chance of TJ surgery and much more dependability among this volatile group of players.  So while I am not saying avoid all young pitchers next season, we need to think an extra second or two before cutting the check.
