FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: JOSE RAMIREZ 3B CLEVELAND INDIANS

The Cleveland Indians have been one of the biggest success stories both in real and in fantasy baseball during 2016.  On a team whose main strength is a deep and power-armed rotation, the lineup has also stepped up and run wild and hit a high amount of home runs all season long.  We already talked about the ultimate buy low gone great for those in fantasy baseball who picked up Mike Napoli off waivers in April but their starting third baseman has also been a swell value in his own right.  We are of course referring to Jose Ramirez who was a curiosity with some sleeper appeal both in 2014 and 2015 but who ultimately fell on his face in both campaigns as he ceded the shortstop spot quickly to Francisco Lindor a year ago.  However the Indians stuck it out with Ramirez since he was still a very young 23 and needless to say, their patience has been rewarded this season as the kid has engineered a fantasy baseball-friendly campaign.  Going into Monday's action, Ramirez had posted the following line:

.314
8 HR
51 RBI
64 R
17 SB

Looking at the numbers, Ramirez has quietly been a solid five-category producer in fantasy baseball which of course is the lofty standard we want our hitters to reach.  Still carrying eligiblity at second, short, third, and the outfield, Ramirez has arguably been the very best "UTIL" fantasy baseball hitter in the game this season since he can be plugged in almost anywhere on those light schedule days or as an injury fill-in.  Especially at shortstop and second base, Ramirez grades out as a near top ten guy in both.  While a .339 BABIP has helped prop the average up, guys with good speed like Ramirez can ward off some regression there.  Also a crazy low 10.9 K/9 rate and solid 7.4 BB/9 show how adept a hitter Ramirez has quickly become after bottoming out at .219 in 2015.  No matter how you view the guy, Ramirez looks primed to stay as a very useful jack-of-all-trades asset.
