FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: CARLOS GOMEZ GOES FROM FIRST ROUND PICK TO DFA IN YEAR-PLUS

We like to use the clice "fall from grace" when it comes to various athletes who have lost their jobs in professional sports for one reason or another.  Outside of off-the-field trouble, drastically reduced on-field production is the primary reason for this.  Perhaps no one has been as extreme in this case as Carlos Gomez who was just designated for assignment by the Houston Astros on Wednesday.  This just a year-plus since Gomez was a late first round pick in most fantasy baseball leagues prior to the 2015 season.  A multiple 15/30 guy in the power/speed categories, Gomez had also solved his early career batting averages woes by hovering around the .280 mark during his superstar days with the Milwaukee Brewers.  However the 2015 season was nothing but an injury-marred mess for Gomez as he hit a woeful .255 with 12 home runs and 17 steals.  The bottom then completely fell out on Gomez in 2016 as he hit .210 with just 5 homers and 12 steals before earning the DFA.  Still young at the age of 30, one has to wonder what went on here.  Injuries were no doubt a major factor as Gomez dealt with ongoing leg and knee problems which seemed to slow his bat and speed.  There were also some whispers concering Gomez and how he suddenly went from failed prospect to a star almost overnight but that can't be proven.  So what we have now here is a guy who is looking like he is toast and his fantasy baseball value vanished months ago.  Obviously he should be cut in all formats and ignored unless a fresh start gets him going again.
