FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: HYUN SOO KIM 1B/OF BALTIMORE ORIOLES

When the Baltimore Orioles signed free agent South Koren first baseman Hyun-Soo Kim, not much was made in terms of a possible fantasy baseball impact with the team adding Mark Trumbo during the winter and also re-upping Chris Davis.  With no place to play, Kim was slated to begin the 2016 season at Triple-A after batting just .178 in exhibition play.  Kim refused the assignment however which created an awkward situation with Buck Showalter not having a spot to play him.  As often happens in situations like this, playing time eventually materializes in one form or another and it is up to the player to take advantage when that chance arrives.  Such is the case with Kim over the last two weeks when Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard went through a prolonged slump that sent him to the bench.  While Kim is a first baseman by trade, Showalter threw him into Ricjard's spot in the outfield and has sat backed and watched the rookie hit ropes all over the diamong to the tune of a .360 average and a home run in just 58 at-bats.  Showing a tremendous approach at the plate, Kim has struck out in just 13.8 percent of his at-bats and is walking at a very high 12.1 percent clip.  While his .415 BABIP is way out of whack into the luck range, Kim is showing a .300 bat with the low K rate and high walk rate and in the process is garnering more playing time in the outfield.  While we have not seen much yet in the way of power, Kim was known for solid pop in his swing in Korea and he is in the right ballpark to send baseballs over outfield walls.  If Kim is still sitting on your league waiver wire, absolutely pick him up before he someone else does.  We are not saying he will turn into a star but the numbers are suggesting he can be a nice add at the very least with dual eligibility at first base and the outfield.
