FANTASY BASEBALL CLOSING TIME: SHAWN KELLY PERSON OF INTEREST WITH JONATHAN PAPELBON SIDELINED

While he has still pitched at a very high level despite advancing into his mid-30's, Washington Nationals closer Jonathan Papelbon couldn't escape the injuries that tend to crop up around players who begin to get up there in age.  Mostly durable throughout his excellent career, Papelbon was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a dreaded strained intercostal muscle.  I say dreaded due to the fact intercostal injuries tend to linger and it is doubtful Paps will be able to get back when the 15 days are through.  That makes picking up setup man Shawn Kelly even more important as the veteran should get a bunch of save chances on a team that is starting to run away with the NL East race.  While far from a shutdown reliever during his career bouncing around a bit between the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, and Nationals, Kelly has pitched very well in 2016 with a 2.70 ERA, 0.86 WHIP.  What has always stood out about Kelly in his career has been his K rate that often is in double figures per nine innings and is right there again this season as he has punched out an extreme 34 batters in 23.1 frames.  Kelly is the guy to own, with Felipe Rivera the backup option.  Grab Kelly where available and if not, grab Rivera in case a committee is used.
